About the ferry

The Cross River Ferry provides a short vehicle and passenger crossing between Cobh and Passage West, offering a convenient alternative to travelling via the Jack Lynch or through the city to get the other side of the harbour. The service is used daily by commuters, local residents, and visitors to the area.

The crossing typically takes around five minutes, depending on conditions.

Why use the ferry

Using the Cross River Ferry typically saves 20–30 minutes compared with driving around Cork Harbour via the Jack Lynch Tunnel, with even greater savings during peak traffic periods.

Operating times

The ferry operates daily with different start times depending on the day of the week.

  • Monday to Friday: 06:15 – 21:30

  • Saturday & Sunday: 06:30 – 21:30

Outside these hours, the ferry does not operate. During periods of disruption, live updates are shown in the status panel above.

Tickets & payment

Tickets are purchased on board  (cash and card accepted) and can also be purchased on the Cross River Ferries website or via their app (just search for “Cross River Ferries” in your app store).

Charges depend on the type of crossing (vehicle, passenger, or cyclist).

Weather & service disruptions

The ferry may be affected by:

  • Fog or poor visibility

  • Strong winds or adverse weather

  • Operational or safety restrictions

When disruptions occur, the live status above will show whether the ferry is running or temporarily suspended.
