Profile
The pier became known as the American Pier after it was expanded by the US military in 1917. This extension was necessary to transport sick and wounded soldiers ashore, where they could receive treatment at the US Navy Base Hospital No 4 located in Whitepoint which was built by American forces to care for their injured servicemen.
Save the American Pier in Cobh
The American Pier Cobh Project Group made up of residents of Whitepoint in association with Cobh Tidy Towns and other community groups, commissioned a consultant’s report on the repair of the American Pier at Whitepoint.
Originally used by US forces, the pier has subsequentlybeen used by generations of Cobh families for swimming at this beautiful and sheltered beach amenity area close to the town. The pier has deteriorated over the last 50 years and requires immediate attention.
