Profile
Kindred Spirits is a memorial honouring the generous 1847 donation made by the Choctaw Nation to support Irish famine relief during the Great Hunger. Remarkably, this act of solidarity came at a time when the Choctaw people were facing severe hardship and poverty themselves, having only recently endured the forced displacement known as the Trail of Tears.
The sculpture features nine stainless steel eagle feathers, each 20 feet (6.1 metres) tall, arranged in a circular formation. Each feather is unique, and together they form the shape of a bowl – symbolising a gift of food offered in compassion.
Created by artist Alex Pentek at the Sculpture Factory in Cork, with help from students at the Crawford College of Art and Design, the piece was installed in Bailick Park in 2015. Commissioned by Midleton Town Council, the memorial was officially unveiled in June 2017 by Chief Gary Batton and Assistant Chief Jack Austin Jr of the Choctaw Nation, along with Councillor Seamus McGrath, County Mayor of Cork. A delegation of 20 Choctaw Nation representatives attended the dedication ceremony.
