Profile
The Lusitania Monument, located in the centre of Casement Square in Cobh, commemorates those who died in the sinking of the Lusitania..
On 7 May 1915, during World War I, the Cunard liner Lusitania was torpedoed by a German U-boat near the Old Head of Kinsale, County Cork. Of the 1,959 passengers and crew on board, 1,198 lost their lives, with fewer than 800 surviving.
Many of the victims were recovered and brought to Cobh, where they were laid to rest in the Old Church Cemetery near the town. A monument in Casement Square, designed by Jerome O’Connor, stands as a tribute to those who perished. The sculpture depicts two fishermen who aided in the rescue efforts, with the Angel of Peace watching over them.
The sinking of the Lusitania had far-reaching consequences, turning international opinion against Germany and helping to push the United States toward entering the war. The tragedy also became a powerful symbol in wartime propaganda, underscoring the brutality of the conflict and rallying support for the Allied cause.
